Why This Work Is Needed

Some of the underground electrical cables in the neighbourhood are getting old and are reaching the end of their useful life.

London Hydro regularly checks its equipment to make sure it is safe and reliable. Testing showed that these cables should be replaced before they begin to fail.

Replacing this equipment will help reduce future outages and keep electricity flowing safely to homes and businesses.

What work will be done?

The project includes:

  • Installing about 2,200 metres of new underground conduit (protective pipe)
  • Installing about 3,130 metres of new underground power cable
  • Installing about 480 metres of specialized underground cable to improve reliability
  • Removing approximately 3,000 metres of old underground cable from service
  • Replacing most existing transformers with newer equipment
  • Upgrading other electrical equipment throughout the neighbourhood
  • Making improvements to the electrical system to help restore power more quickly during outages
What residents can expect during construction

Traffic, Parking, and Access

Construction will take place throughout the Platts Lane Estates neighbourhood and near parts of Platt's Lane and Western Road.

Residents may notice:

  • Temporary lane restrictions
  • Construction vehicles and equipment
  • Short-term changes to traffic flow
  • Limited access in active work areas

Contractors will follow City of London safety and traffic rules.

Noise

Construction activities such as drilling and excavation may create some noise and vibration during normal working hours.

Planned Power Outages

Some planned power outages may be needed to safely complete the work.

Whenever possible, residents will receive at least 48 hours' notice before a planned outage.

Trees, Landscaping, and Restoration

Some tree trimming or brush removal may be needed to complete the work safely.

To reduce impacts, contractors will use directional drilling, which allows most of the work to be done underground without large trenches.

After construction is complete, any disturbed grass, pavement, sidewalks, or landscaping will be repaired.
